Tax Reform Act:  What does it really mean? 

Our speaker will be Brian Hood, CFP, Founder & Principal of Legacy Financial Group

On Dec. 22, 2017, President Donald Trump signed the tax reform bill, called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, into law, after it passed both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

This tax reform bill, drafted based on a tax reform plan that was developed in consultation with the Trump administration, will make significant changes to the federal tax code. Specifically, the tax reform bill will have a substantial impact on businesses.

Managing employee absences efficiently and in a way that meets ever-changing legal requirements has become a major employer challenge.  This Leave Management Continuing Education course from the Hartford School of Insurance highlights the different types of leaves with which employers must comply including federally-mandated leaves under FMLA, state-specific leaves and employer-sponsored leaves. The ADAAA (Americans with Disabilities Amendment Act) is also covered, as employers have a legal obligation to provide certain accommodations that can result in time away from work.  Those attending will learn how these laws should be administered in order to avoid administrative pitfalls and mistakes that can be costly and time-consuming to the employer.

SUSAN  FREED is a Senior Shareholder at the Davis Brown Law Firm where she practices exclusively in the areas of health law and employee benefits.  Susan counsels employers on health benefits, assisting them with regulatory compliance and plan drafting and implementation.  Susan is a frequent presenter on employee benefit issues and has co-authored the Employee Benefit Section of the Iowa Bar Association Business Law Manual.  She also serves on the Board of Directors of The Wellness Council of Iowa, the Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation and the West Des Moines Library Friends Foundation.

About Our Speakers

Cathy Noecker Crowley, Owner, C2 Consulting
Ms. Crowley began her career at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield as a marketing trainee in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During the course of her career at Wellmark, she worked as a national account manager in eastern Iowa and then served in various regional and statewide sales leadership roles. Ms. Crowley retired from Wellmark in July 2010 as vice president of key and national account sales. During her time at Wellmark she served on the Consortium Health Plan Board and was on the executive board of the Blue Cross Association National Labor Office. Ms. Crowley is now the owner of C2 Consulting focusing on employee health and lifestyle management strategies. She is consulting with DeskActive as a business development consultant.

Peter Roberts, President, Roberts Health Solutions
Mr. Roberts is a seasoned health care executive with 26 years in leadership roles in health insurance (Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield) and health care delivery (University of Michigan Medical Center). His experience includes conceptualization, planning and implementation of broad-based programs working in collaboration with health care providers to achieve and sustain medical and pharmacy benefit cost trends at/below the lowest 25th percentile of Blue Cross Blue Shield plans nationally. Mr. Roberts also developed innovative and effective quality improvement and population health management in partnerships with health care providers and national best-in-class organizations in an integrated, local, community-based health improvement system for a population. Finally, he established and built two successful and profitable provider-owned health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Since leaving
Wellmark in September 2009, Mr. Roberts formed Roberts Health Solutions LLC, which provides professional consulting services to a variety of health care clients.
